Due to the need for skills, mostly by the widows, youth and women living in our community,
Skills Plus Uganda, started the tailoring project to provide self employment opportunities for these people. Another
problem that is affecting the youth is the lack of school dues, that prevent them to go to higher institutions of learning,
and because of this challenge, most of them drop out in senior four (s.4) and a few in senior six making and
do not have a clear way for a future.
At the beginning of the year 2008, the organization bought two (2) sewing machines to start on
the Tailoring program and we begun with five clients as shown below:
1. Naikoba Loy
2. Akinyi Susan
3.
Byogero Azeena
4. Kiden Leah
5. Achien Annet
With the good relationship between the project (Skills Plus, Uganda) and the community, the number
of clients increased in a short time and therefore, there was need to increase the number of sewing machines to serve all
the clients. This was not easy on the side of the organization with the limited resources.
However, by the middle of the year, the organization had to hire another two sewing machines to meet the services of the peoples.
Most of our client are females selected from women who are house wives and widows without source of income.
As a way of cost sharing with our clients, the organization decided to charge three thousand shillings only (3000/=) per month
from every client. More funds were raised to hire more sewing machines.
The increased demand for the tailoring skills attracted a donation of sewing machines from Humanitarian
aid - Church of Jesus of the Latter day s. We made a proposal and it was honoured. We received a grant
woth UGX 12,000,000 in form of sewing machines and accessories. Our gratitude to Mr. & Mrs. Bin
We have a
challenge of raising funds for paying the training staff, for maintenance, repair and servicing of the sewing machines.
We also need training materials on an ongoing basis.
