Computer Studies Department

This was the first program to be implemented by the organization since its inception on 1st October2006 with one (1)computer and five computer live wares,by the middle of the year the number had slightly increased and we had also acquired another computer therefore the total number of computers we had for training were two (2).

By the year 2007, the number of students had risen so we had to hire another computer bringing the total to 3.The number always increases in the holidays because most of
the school goers at this time are at their homes, so to keep them busy, parents bring them to get such skills as they wait to go back to school. Another reason is that most secondary and primary schools do not have computers yet to some students it is a requirement like science students in S.5 and S.6 that use computers for research and more especially those that are waiting to join higher institutions of learning like universities ,. The increase in population in Uganda and factories in Jinja town also has increased the computer demand because the investors need people who have the computer skills since most of their machines are computerized.
The Organization mainly depends on the computer program. Organizational work requires computerization which is done minimizing the costs from open market. The project started in 2006 with one computer. By mid 2006, 30 people had registered for computer lessons and at the closing of the year, there were 60 people. The organization expects to have more than 100 people registered by the year 2008, but the Organization may only be able to handle this number if we get more computer units. The organization is searching for donors and well-wishers to donate more computers to serve the community better.

The program aims at introducing information technology to rural areas for the rural people. Prior knowledge about the computer is NOT a prerequisite for one to pursue a computer course at Skills Plus because the skilled tutors can impart computer knowledge from scratch. The program offers free typing lessons, flexible learning hours from Monday to Sunday (Afternoon) and ample time for practice. Computer courses can be undertaken as whole or in part, depending on the requirements of the client. A certificate is then awarded thereafter. Learners pay a small management fee to maintain the program.

At the beginning of the year 2008, the organization started on a campaign to get partners to help it implement its activities and achieve its set objectives. Apparently, we have a number of partners as it will be seen in our report.
